Her Private Life: A Quirky Fangirl’s Life

Her Private Life is a romantic-comedy drama that tells the love story of Sung Deok Mi (Park Min Young) and Ryan Gold (Kim Jae Wook).

Deok Mi is a talented art curator who secretly hides the fact from almost everyone that she is a hardcore fangirl. After the current boss of the Cheum Museum of Art where Deok Mi works gets investigated for embezzlement, Ryan Gold becomes the new Art Director.

Although Deok Mi and Ryan Gold aren’t a perfect fit at first, they slowly get along, discover the deeper side of each other’s lives, and of course fall in love with each other as time passes.

Her Private Life, one of the highest rated Korean dramas in April 2019, is directed by Hong Jong Chan and written by Kim Hye Young. Based on a novel called Noona Fan Dot Com (2007) by Kim Sung Yeon, it is also adapted into a webtoon in 2019. Keep in mind that the story is slightly different from the drama.

This amusing and heart-warming series isn’t only about romantic relationship, but it also brings up the importance of knowing one’s self-worth, friendship, family, and other aspects of life.

Art may be great, but it can’t be greater than a living human being. Regardless of how insignificant I may seem, I’m still greater than those condescending paintings that are hung on that wall. Because I’m a living being, and I will continue to live.

These are the best 3 things that I’ve learned from Her Private Life.

1. Let’s Be Smart Fangirls and Fanboys

Fanboys and fangirls are satisfied with looking from a distance. There’s no touching or holding involved. Because just looking at the person brings you happiness. That’s the rule.

Being a fangirl or fanboy can actually be a cool and positive thing. You can build a strong friendship or a community, work out your brain to remember tons of detail, boost your creativity, and perhaps create exciting memories.

But there’s also a negative side when fangirls and fanboys become too obsessed with their idol. Obsessive fans are willing to do anything even if it’s bad, including stalking their idol or even hurting other people because of a certain rumor.

Let’s not be those scary fangirls and fanboys, shall we? Deok Mi teaches that true fangirls and fanboys should be smart in maintaining their emotion and know how to position themselves in any situation. Even if people hate what you like, it doesn’t mean that you must hate them back.

2. Be Honest with What You’re Fighting For

Honesty is not just about telling the truth. It’s about being real with yourself and others about who you are, what you want and what you need to live your most authentic life.

If you love someone, dislike someone, disagree with someone, or think about taking new opportunity that’s different from other’s path – be honest even if you’re scared of the outcome. On the positive side, sometimes honesty helps you find the answers you’re looking for.

3. Forgive Yourself and Others

All characters in this series go through conflicts with each other, whether it’s with a partner, a friend, or a family member. Some can forgive others easily and some take more time to forgive.

But this series points out that what matters most is not about how quickly you forgive others, instead it is about how sincerely you forgive others. A humble apology might save a relationship for a lifetime.

Everybody makes mistakes and it is important to forgive yourself as well. With self-forgiveness, you can move toward loving yourself and create a better life.

Be grateful for any experience that has happened because they’ve all contributed to making you who you are.
